CULLMAN, Ala. – At the monthly meeting of the Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE), the board discussed and approved newly increased supplements for extracurricular activities. With a 3% increase in the total Athletic and Academic Supplement Plan, Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette said he hopes the increase will entice and encourage schools and their principals to add and support new programs for students.

“We’ve added theater to that; we’ve got some schools and we hope more schools will pick up on this. If the schools agree to do two shows and have practices after school, there is a supplement that their principal can assign to a teacher there,” Barnette shared. “We’ve also added a wrestling supplement.”

Vinemont High School was among the first to have a wrestling team on campus in May of this year, a trend that Barnette said he hopes will expand with the inclusion of the sport across the county system for boys and girls, as well as the increased faculty supplementation.

“It includes boys and girls. Our logic for this is it’s our first year to have wrestling in our school district,” said Barnette, who explained the new combined gender supplement will separate into two supplements as the program and its enrollment grow. “This first year, we are trying to get interest so we have combined those, but as that grows, hopefully we can separate that into two different supplements. We just want to encourage our schools to participate in that.”

During the Superintendent’s Report, Barnette shared some important upcoming dates for Cullman County Schools students and families. Open House throughout the county will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 3-6 p.m.; check individual school Facebook pages or contact them directly for specific dates and times. Thursday, Aug. 8 is the first day of school in Cullman County Schools only for students with a last name beginning with the letters A-K, and only students with last names beginning with L-Z will attend on Aug. 9. All Cullman County Schools students will attend Monday, Aug. 12.
