Obituary: Douglas “Sonny” Wade Young Sr.

Funeral services for Douglas “Sonny” Wade Young Sr. will be 3 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2024 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Hanceville Funeral Home.

Born on Nov. 26, 1947 in Athens, Alabama, Sonny grew up to become a skilled welder and boilermaker. He passed away June 1, 2024 in Gadsden, Alabama. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend to many. He was a master of his craft, able to fix any problem that came his way. He was also an excellent problem solver and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Sonny loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was also an avid fan of Alabama Football.

Survivors include his children, Doug Young, Keith Young (Linda), Becky Johnson, Laura Whitfield (Michael); grandchildren, Haley Callaway (Robbie), Baylee Johnson (Dylan), Chloe Cox, Taylor Whitfield; great-grandsons, Matthew Tennyson, Elijah Morris; sisiter, Roma Lill; niece, Melissa Lill-Smith; great-niece and nephew, Wade Smith and Ally Smith.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his wife, Christia Pichelmayer-Young; parents, Conyel and Nima Young; and his son-in-law, Matt Whitfield.

Sonny will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kind heart, generosity, and exceptional skills will never be forgotten.

Those who have the honor to serve as pallbearers are Michael Whitfield, Wade Smith, Robbie Morris, Dylan Spencer, Hunter Baker, and RaeKwuan Spencer.
