VINEMONT, Ala. – Vinemont Councilwoman Charlotte Cosper resigned, effective immediately, at the council’s April meeting, leaving place 3 open. On Monday, June 3, the council will hold a special-called meeting at 6 p.m. to hear nominations to fill the vacancy.

So far, four residents – Ross Campbell, Michael Ashbaugh, Grady Malone and Jerry Smith – have expressed interest in the position. Nominations will be accepted until the council appoints the new council person June 3.

Campbell, a lifelong resident of the municipality, has seen the growth of the area over his lifetime. His bid for the council comes from a willingness to “be a part of it moving forward and do my part.”

Malone, a retired U.S. Army sergeant, currently works in building inspection in Madison and moved to Vinemont from Blountsville later in life. He said he plans to bring his past military experience to the open seat, building and strengthening teamwork and cohesive cooperation within the town limits.

“You cannot accomplish the mission unless we are all holding hands and leading the way,” Malone said. “You either succeed as a team or you fail as individuals.”

Ashbaugh, having lived in Vinemont for more than two decades, brings business and engineering experience to the council through his degrees and past careers. Ashbaugh is now retired and hopes to put his free time to use and working with and helping the town.

Smith, a former Vinemont council member who ran for Place 5 in 2020 is once again up for consideration to hold a council seat. The retired Army lieutenant has led a very active civic and philanthropic life, serving on various boards and committees, such as the Department of Human Resources Committee and Cullman County’s Solid Waste Committee.

Smith said his statement made in 2020 still rings true: “My vast experience in business, civic and financial affairs qualifies me to work for the betterment and advancement of South Vinemont.”

Nominations and applications will be accepted at Vinemont Town Hall until an appointment to the council is made. The newly appointed council member will be sworn in and assume duties on June 11, at the council’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Vinemont Town Hall is located at 36 Patton Drive and can be reached by phone at 256-737-5411.
