FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Fairview High School Principal Dr. Johnny Whaley on Wednesday, May 1, announced that he has accepted a position with the Alabama State Department of Education. Whaley informed Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette of his resignation, effective May 31, 2024.
“I have accepted a position at the Alabama State Department of Education and will start June 1,” Whaley said. “I will miss the students, staff and school community. The community has been great and I appreciate everyone for their support.”
Whaley has worked in the Cullman County Schools system for nearly 22 years in various capacities, serving as an instructional leader, classroom teacher, guidance counselor and administrator. Beginning as a social sciences teacher, “Coach” Whaley, as he is known to many past students, began his tenure at Vinemont Middle School before transitioning to Hanceville High School. He was a guidance counselor at Vinemont Middle and High School, then principal at Vinemont Middle School and, finally, Fairview High School.
Barnette said he recognizes the loss of a great administrator from his system, but wishes Whaley well.
“Dr. Whaley has served the students of Cullman County well in several different capacities. While we will miss him, we are excited for him as he begins a new chapter in his career. We appreciate his leadership at Fairview High School over the past year and wish him the absolute best moving forward.”
