CULLMAN, Ala. – A fire in the early morning hours Thursday, April 25, claimed the home and possessions of a Cullman woman who is now left to pick up the pieces.

KJ Canaday was abruptly awakened around 1 a.m. on Thursday to the sight of smoke and fire engulfing her home. The fire, caused by a small air conditioner unit exploding, quickly spread throughout the house, leaving it in ruins. Despite the swift response of local firefighters, the home and all its contents were completely destroyed, leaving Canaday to face a devastating loss.

The local community and first responders came together to support Canaday in her time of need, beginning from the time of the incident and continuing. From the EMS and law enforcement personnel who were on the scene to The Church at the Well, everyone has been working tirelessly to ensure that Canaday’s immediate needs are met. The Church at the Well, Canaday’s home church, has been providing spiritual guidance and emotional support.

“Thank you for the 84 messages I have received in the last 24 hours; thank you to the  cops who sat on the side of the road with me to help me calm down, the ambulance crew who transported me and the amazing firemen who came quickly,” said Canaday. “Also huge shout out to my church family Church at the Well Cullman for the unexplainable love that’s been showered over me through declaring the word of the Lord in my life and meeting my physically and spiritual and emotional needs without me having to ask.”

Though her home was destroyed, Canady said, her faith has not wavered.

“Through the heartbreak and destruction I’ve faced in life, Jesus has always been there, whispering His presence to me. In the midst of the physical ashes, I see God’s promises shining through,” she said.

Left to rebuild from the ground up, Canaday’s most pressing needs are shelter and clothing. A GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/0291bccd) has been created. Funds raised will assist in replacing the smoke- and fire-damaged clothing, shoes, furniture and everything else that was lost in the blaze.

Canaday said what has kept her strong through this devastating time is her faith. “I praise the Lord for His covering and for sparing my life. Thank you, God, for your kindness, guidance and goodness. From ashes to beauty – that’s the God I serve. He turns our tragedies into something beautiful, bringing glory to His name.”
