CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday, April 22, issued a proclamation naming May 6-10, 2024, as Teacher Appreciation Week in the city, joining the upcoming national observance. Mayor Woody Jacobs delivered the proclamation to Cullman City Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff, who was accompanied to the meeting by several of the system’s principals and award-winning teachers.

Reading from the proclamation, Jacobs called teachers “the cornerstone of our educational system, dedicating their time, energy and expertise to shape the minds and future of our youth,” and said that “National Teacher Appreciation Week provides an opportunity to express our gratitude for the invaluable contributions made by teachers each day.”

Kallhoff said, “On behalf of the school system, I’m so grateful that the City leadership is just recognizing our principals and the work we do at the schools, and there’s some principals here with us and of course I’m here. But the rubber doesn’t hit the road with us. It’s the teachers. And when you’re one of the top five school systems in the state of Alabama – and we are one of the top five – there’s got to be something special going on in the classroom.”

Kallhoff also shared the system’s quarterly report, telling the council that:

  • The high school recently hosted over 200 students for an “in-house field trip” to learn STEM skills like coding, robotics and virtual reality
  • The robotics clubs of East Elementary and West Elementary will team up for a robotics showcase at West Elementary on May 6, 2024
  • West Elementary student Avery Maples placed third in the elementary division of the statewide Alabama Governor’s App Challenge for her “Daily Trivia App”
  • City schools will be out on May 3, 2024, for the state high school track meet
  • Non-resident enrollment opens May 1, 2024, and will go to mid-June; because of current numbers, Kallhoff said that the system is especially seeking seventh and eighth graders
  • The high school track resurfacing project will begin in May
  • Fire alarms will be upgraded this summer at Cullman City Primary School and East Elementary School
  • A second-grade playground will be installed at Cullman City Primary School
  • Construction and renovation continues at Cullman Middle School
