CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Museum’s April Walking Tours are going strong each Saturday, and will wrap up April 20 and April 27. On these days, admission to the museum is free.

“Every Saturday in April the museum participates in the Alabama Tourism Department’s historic walking tours. The tours are free and on those Saturdays, we do not charge admission to the museum,” said Museum Director Drew Green.

The museum is home to many artifacts, articles and items related to Cullman’s founding and history, allowing visitors to experience the community’s growth over the last 150 years.

Some of the items at the museum include an incredibly preserved atlatl, a hunting tool used by Native Americans in the region when they inhabited the area, and one of Cullman’s first lighted business signs. Other exhibits showcase pioneer life in Cullman, as well as medical advancements, war efforts, music, pictures and media from throughout the life of the city, with sections that focus on John G. Cullmann and his family and life.

“From our Native American room to a room celebrating our founder and his German heritage,” Green takes pride in the holdings of the museum that sees tourists and locals alike, “People from out of town are always impressed with our museum and often tell us so,” he said.

Boosting visitor numbers is something that Green hopes for, but more importantly, he said, he wants visitors to be immersed in the heritage of the town through the memorabilia, artifacts and documents the museum owns and displays. Green has spent considerable time documenting the museum’s holdings online, allowing virtually anyone to tour the museum at their convenience.

“We have an extensive website with more information and also a Facebook page,” he said. “During the time we were closed for the pandemic, I made short videos about the museum and they are on the Facebook page.”
