VINEMONT, Ala– At its monthly meeting Tuesday, March 12, the Vinemont Town Council continued talks of creating a planning commission and board of adjustments.

The subjects were tabled once again, amid the lack of interested residents who would be required for the two groups. Each advisory panel requires either five or nine interested individuals who live within Vinemont’s municipal limits and are registered voters in the municipality.

“I think we need – I know I do, and the rest of the council and everybody else, from what I understand – needs more of an idea of who is going to be involved in the board of adjustments and the planning commission,” said Mayor Radginal Dodson.

The council also approved the addition and installation of two new murals: one slated to be on the town storm shelter facing the community park on Ridgeway Street and one on the old Lodge building located on Vinemont School property on High School Road. Both murals will be completed later this spring by local artists, putting the small town of Vinemont on the North Alabama Mural Trail, founded by artists working with the University of Alabama. The mural that will find its home on the town’s storm shelter will cost approximately $1,200-$1,700; the mural planned for the Lodge building is estimated to cost $1,800.

Councilman Chris Thompson shared his ideas for the mural on the Lodge building and the importance of integrating the school’s mascot, saying, “I was thinking originally, ‘We are Vinemont’ and ‘Fly like an Eagle’ because we are the Vinemont Eagles.”

Concerning the town’s upcoming community gathering, the inaugural Farmers and Makers Market, the council approved a budget of $1,500 for the event. Approximately 40-50 vendors are expected to be present and set up both indoors and outdoors. The market is to be held on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Vinemont Community Center. The plan for the new event is to spotlight local artisans and makers, along with the community’s small growers and farmers.

“So far we have nine (vendors) signed up,” said Town Clerk Kayecea Sasser. “I’m estimating we will have around 40-50 to sign up.”

In other business, the council:

  • Approved Charlotte Cosper as the council’s voting delegate for the upcoming ALM conference
  • Approved the request from the American Legion Auxiliary for $450 for Boys and Girls State

Upcoming events include:

  • The March Senior Citizen Luncheon will be held on Monday, March 18, at the Vinemont Community Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • The town’s Easter event and egg hunt will take place on Saturday, March 23, from 3-5 p.m. at the Vinemont Community Center
  • Farmers and Makers Market is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, at the Vinemont Community Center from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The next meeting of the Vinemont Town Council will be on Tuesday, April 9. The work session will begin at 5 p.m. and the meeting will follow at 6.
