CULLMAN, Ala. – After collecting a 6-0 win at Homewood earlier this week, the Bearcats were back home at Bill Shelton Field Saturday to host a doubleheader against Mountain Brook. Cullman dropped a tight opening game 6-5 and the Spartans took game two over the Bearcats 3-0.
Mountain Brook 6 – Cullman 5 (Game One)
Thanks in large part to three Cullman errors, Mountain Brook was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bearcats answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 1 when Tanner Gaines drove Jonah Inman home for a run with a single up the middle. A couple at bats later, Bennett Johnson scored on a passed ball and Cullman went into the second inning leading 2-1.
After a scoreless second inning, the Spartans got another run on the board in the top of the third to tie things up at 2. The Bearcats retook the lead in the bottom of the third when Inman ripped a 2-run double into center field, bringing Brooks Heatherly and Cooper Loftin in to score and making it a 4-2 game. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth and the fifth, but the Spartans made their move in the sixth. A bases-loaded walk, a fielder’s choice and an RBI double led to four runs for Mountain Brook and the ‘Cats found themselves down 6-4 going into their half of the sixth.
An error allowed Gaines to score in the bottom of the sixth, trimming the lead to 6-5 but Cullman was unable to push any more runs across in the final two innings and the Spartans held on to take game one 6-5.
Inman led the way at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Gaines finished with three hits and an RBI and Carson Stancil added a pair of hits in the loss.
Mountain Brook 3 – Cullman 0 (Game Two)
The Bearcats had a little more trouble at the plate in game two. After Mountain Brook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Inman led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, but it was the only hit Cullman recorded in the game.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Spartans extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth and kept the ‘Cats off the board the rest of the way to secure a 3-0 win.
Bennett Johnson got the start on the mound and went six innings for Cullman, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven batters.
The Bearcats will be on the road Tuesday for an area matchup at Decatur.
