ADDISON, Ala. — Addison hosted the Winston County Yellow Jackets for an important county matchup Monday night and the game did not disappoint. Addison came away with a tough 2-0-win thanks in large part to a dominant performance on the mound from Kiah Lake. Lake tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five batters to earn the win.

Lake cruised through the first two innings and ran into a little bit of trouble in the third.

Lake struck out the first two Jackets and then the trouble started. Eli Moore, Garrett Lewis and Landon Kelley all had singles to load the bases with two outs. Lake was then able to bear down and get the Jackets clean-up hitter to hit a come backer to the mound which Lake fielded and threw to first for the third out.

WCHS pitcher Eli Moore was matching Lake pitch for pitch and then he ran into a little problem in the Bulldog fourth. Bulldog Elijah Roberts singled and Tucker Thompson reached on an error. They both advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no one out. Moore got an infield pop-up and then walked Lake to load the bases. Stone Talley then got a sacrifice fly to center to score Roberts giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Moore got out of the inning, getting the next Bulldog out to end the fourth.

Lake then started to show a little weariness in the sixth. Lake hit Kelley, who stole second, then walked Nick Moody to put runners on first and second. Lake then got the next three Yellow Jackets out to end the threat.

Addison added an insurance run with two outs when Lane Stewart walked, Lake singled and then Talley drilled a shot off the fence in dead center field to coast into second with a double.Tad Hyche, who ran for Stewart, scored giving Addison the 2-0 lead.

Lake struck out the first Jacket but then hit the pitch limit the state puts on high school pitchers and had to leave the game. Cole Thompson came in and did his best Mariano Rivera impression as he struck out the next two Jackets to get the save and preserve the win for the Bulldogs.

Kiah Lake,

“First of all, I want to thank God and my family, especially my mom, for me being able to accomplish what I have on the baseball field and more importantly on the field of life.  This was the best game I’ve pitched this year, my arm felt good, and I just had all the confidence that I could help my team today.”

Addison Head Coach Lee Williams,

“Very proud of my kids and how they have accepted the challenge of playing a difficult schedule and never complaining when things don’t go our way. Today Kiah (Lake) pitched great and Cole (Thompson) slammed the door.”
