PREP BASEBALL: Fairview blanks Dora 13-0, Vinemont splits doubleheader

DORA, Ala. – The Fairview Aggies traveled to Dora for a varsity matchup Saturday afternoon, and they only needed five innings to handle the Bulldogs. The Aggies plated five runs in the second inning to take an early lead and after adding to their lead in the third and fourth, tacked on four more in the fifth to wrap up a 13-0 win.

Fairview 13 – Dora 0 (Baseball)

After a scoreless first inning, Fairview got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Lucas West and Barett York hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, then Colton Jennings hit an RBI double to right field to give the Aggies the early lead. A hit by pitch put runners on the corners. Later that inning, back-to-back errors allowed York, Jennings, and Bryceson Turner to score to make it 4-0. Nicolas Gregory scored on another Dora error as they stretched their lead to 5-0. 

Turner and Caden Barrett hit back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the third to give Fairview a 7-0 lead. The Aggies made it 9-0 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gannon Black and an RBI single by West. They continued to add to their lead in the top of the fifth, as an RBI single by Barrett, a two-run double by Gregory, and a two-run single by Black increased their lead to 13-0. Gregory retired the Bulldogs in order in their half to help seal a 13-0 win for Fairview.

Black finished with a hit and three RBIs for Fairview (8-3). Barrett added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while West (three hits), Turner (two hits), Gregory (one hit), and Jennings (one hit) each collected an RBI in the win. Ben Bryan and Gregory gave up just three hits combined, walked three and struck out four.

East Lawrence 4 – Vinemont 3 (Baseball)

East Lawrence scored on a Vinemont error in their home half of the first inning to put them on the scoreboard first. Vinemont loaded the bases in the top of the second on a pair of singles and a hit by pitch, then Kayden Henderson lined a two-run double to right field to give them a 2-1 lead. Vinemont added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Jaxon Holcomb hit a leadoff double, then later on, a balk moved him up to third with one out. Josh Rhodes hit a sacrifice fly to give them a 3-1 lead.

East Lawrence put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, then an RBI double made it a 3-2 game. A walk loaded the bases, then a two-run single to center field gave them the 4-3 come-from-behind win over Vinemont.

Henderson finished with a hit and two RBIs for Vinemont and Rhodes added an RBI in the loss.

Vinemont 15 – Covenant Christan 13 (Baseball)

Covenant Christian scored a run in their opening at-bats to give them the early lead, but Vinemont answered right back in their half. With two outs, Jake Hale hit a double, then later scored on an RBI single by Owen McKinney to tie the game up at one. McKinney later scored to give Vinemont a 2-1 lead. Josh Rhodes scored on an error, and Hayden Robinson added an RBI double to stretch Vinemont’s lead to 4-1 going into the top of the third.

Covenant Christian cut it to 4-3 in the top of the third on an RBI single and a Vinemont error. Vinemont sent 14 batters to the plate in their half of the third as they put up 10 runs. The big hits came from Holcomb (RBI double), Rush Sandlin (two-run double), Robinson (three-run single), and McKinney (solo home run), as Vinemont’s lead quickly swelled to 11 at 14-3.

Covenant Christian countered by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth to cut it to 14-8. They continued to cut into the Vinemont lead in the top of the fifth, as an RBI fielder’s choice, an RBI single, and an error made it a 14-11 game. Hale scored on a wild pitch in Vinemont’s half of the fifth to give them a 15-11 lead. Covenant Christian made things a little interesting in the top of the seventh, as an RBI single and an RBI groundout cut it to 15-13. Rhodes forced the next batter to ground out to end the game, and Vinemont hung on to defeat Covenant Christian 15-13.

Robinson led the way for Vinemont (10-3) with a pair of hits and four RBIs. Sandlin added a pair of hits and three RBIs. McKinney finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Hale (three hits), Holcomb (two hits), Henderson (one hit) and Ryne Dalton (one hit) each collected an RBI in the win.
