CULLMAN, Ala. — The Cullman City Council on Monday evening, Feb. 19, recognized Mike Voss, recently retired chairman of the City of Cullman Planning Commission, for his 16 years of service to the City on the commission. Voss had served since September 2007, and had been chairman for the last 12 years. He submitted his resignation on Jan. 9, 2024.

Mayor Woody Jacobs presented Voss a resolution noting, in part, that “during Mike’s many years of service, his expertise and active participation were invaluable to the Planning Commission’s goal of ensuring orderly and sustainable growth, while preserving Cullman’s unique character,” and “as Chairman Mike presided in a firm but impartial manner over the monthly Planning Commission meetings, building a reputation and a legacy as a well-informed, respected and fair leader with a genuine love for his community.”

In his own words, Jacobs commended the orderliness of Voss’ commission meetings, sharing, “If you’ve ever attended a planning commission where, maybe, the crowd was a little hostile – and that happens occasionally – Mike was fair, and he would say, ‘We want to hear from you, but we’re not going to repeat the same thing over and over and over,’ and he meant it.”

Council President Jenny Folsom told Voss, “Sixteen years on the planning commission is extremely commendable. It’s a very important committee, and your service has just been extraordinary. Thank you.”
