CULLMAN, Ala. –  The inaugural My Bloody Valentine powerlifting meet is set for Saturday, Feb.24, from 6 p.m. until the last athlete has completed his or her final lift. Weigh-ins for athletes will begin at 4. The meet will be held at The Garage, a local gym located at 4330 County Road 703, in Cullman.

The meet will cover the primary three lifts in a traditional powerlifting meet: the squat, deadlift and bench press. Lifters will get three attempts at each lift, with judges determining a clean lift from a failed lift. A singlet is required. The meet will be raw with no wraps and will be using WRPF standards on all lifts.

The competition will have an 80-lifter cap with a $100 buy-in per lifter. The top female and male winners will walk away with a quarter of the total pot each, with the remainder going to cover expenses for The Garage and Cullman Barbell. This will be an unsanctioned meet available to lifters in all categories.

Zack Gordon, owner of Cullman Barbell, said about the significance of the event, “We need more events like this in Cullman. I have previously attempted to try and do things like this. We need more attention drawn to our local strength sport athletes.”

Gordon has made it his goal to promote local athletes, while also promoting other local businesses in the fitness community, such as the local gym, The Garage, and his own coaching business, Cullman Barbell.

With The Garage hosting the meet, attendees can expect an intense, fun and rowdy event with an explosive atmosphere for the lifters’ benefit. For those who love to encourage and hype up athletes in their element, this will be the place to be. Admission is $10 a person for those wanting to come out and watch the event.

Johnny Deeper Apparel will set up shop in The Garage and Taylor Marie Crowder, a professional fitness photographer, will also be in attendance, offering photography packages to the athletes participating in the meet.
