First Source for Women, Cullman County’s pregnancy resource center, is in need of volunteers. (First Source for Women)

CULLMAN, Ala. – Unplanned pregnancies can leave some women and families in need of help. For those unprepared parents in Cullman County who are scared and in need of help, support, advice or even pregnancy care, First Source for Women is a resource available for all.

The volunteer-based pregnancy care center has three offices – one in Hanceville, one in the heart of Cullman and a mobile unit. The center runs mostly like a traditional medical provider’s office; there are appointments and magazines with a few mismatched chairs among the furniture that lines the walls. Ultrasounds, counseling services and even maternity clothes and baby care items are all up for grabs for potential parents at First Source. Right now, First Source is in need of something itself: volunteers.

First Source for Women’s Meredith Little said, “Advocates are the heart of our center and the direct contact for every girl who comes into our center. We are also always needing floater volunteers; they don’t have to commit to any set day a week. They can just come in and help when they can, whether that be with our mailouts, prepping for events, helping with the front desk or other special projects.”

Volunteer opportunities range from a hands-on position of nurse sonographer performing ultrasounds and scans, to the event planning committee, charged with planning and coordinating events the center holds. On its website, First Source for Women lists these as possible volunteer opportunities for those who wish to be face to face with clients:  receptionist, client advocate, boutique assistant, floater, sonographers and sidewalk advocate. Other opportunities include public relations, event planning and underwriting committees, church liaison, building maintenance and event volunteers.

Volunteers will be asked to complete a short screening to verify their volunteer eligibility, as well as any necessary paperwork. Individuals interested in volunteering should contact First Source for Women at volunteer@firstsourceforwomen.org, find and fill out the volunteer application online or call the office at 256-352-5683. First Source for Women’s Hanceville office is located at 203 Commercial St; its Cullman office is located at 702 Second Ave. NW. The hours for both offices are Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
