Obituary: Shirley Ann Price Dovel

Graveside service for Shirley Ann Price Dovel, age 88, of Cullman, will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at Hillview Cemetery, Alexander City, AL, burial at Hillview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan, 26, 2024, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dovel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cullman, Alabama, where she played the piano for many years. She was a 1952 graduate of Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Alabama. She attended the University of Montevallo and then went to Birmingham Southern College where she graduated with her teaching degree in French and English. She went on to receive her master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

She taught French and English at Good Hope High School, Cullman High School, Hueytown High School and Ensley High School to just name a few. She enjoyed many years of teaching her students before her retirement. After her retirement she was a master gardener and enjoyed cross stitching as her hobby.

Mrs. Dovel passed away on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, at her residence. She was born, Oct. 6, 1935, to Hoyt Price and Tigjo Price, where they both were long time employees of Avondale Mills in Alexander City, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James “Sonny” P. Dovel, II; sister, Monnie Jo Price Tobin.

Survivors include her sons, James P. Dovel, III and Glenn (Vicki) Dovel; grandchildren, Misti (Chris) Bressette, Heather (Philip) Cleckler and Adam (Sarah) Allison; great grandchildren, Meredith Cleckler, Hayden Cleckler, Harley Cleckler, Brayden Bressette, Kaylee Bressette and Dakota Metcalf; nieces, Elizabeth Powning and Vanessa Tobin; nephews, Henry Tobin and Rick Tobin.
