Elwin Oneal Swann, age 83, of Hanceville, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. Elwin was born on Aug. 7, 1940 to Avery and Effie Swann in Garden City, Alabama.
He grew up in Garden City and graduated from Hanceville High School in 1959. Elwin served four years in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966 in Strategic Air Command as a helicopter Crew Chief. He returned to Alabama and was employed by the Monsanto Company for over 30 years before retiring.
Elwin was very involved in his children’s lives and an active member of the community as they grew up. He was always ready to volunteer when it came to youth sports. He held many sports leadership positions, was a school trustee and committed coach.
Survivors include his daughter Tracy Looney; his son Oneal (Nikki) Swann; brothers Gilbert (Jerry) Swann, Ronald (Dioma) Swann, Anthony (Rita) Swann and sister Judy (Ken) McMahon; grandchildren, Kassie (Jason) Roberson, Kallie Looney, Dustin (Tiffany) Swann, Jaycey (Michael) Morris, Kyle, Kolby (Alex) Smith, and Kody (Dakota) Smith and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his daughter Loree Swann Nicholson, son in law Jimmy Looney and daughter in law Rhonda Hardy Swann.
A visitation for Elwin will be Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024 at Hanceville Funeral Home from 12 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Garden City Cemetery with Pastor Byron Bales officiating.
