HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville Elementary School Assistant Principal Emily Brown wanted to bring something special to her students this year, and what better way to do so than to take them “around the world” to learn about Christmas traditions?
Brown said she started thinking about idea to do this a few months ago and it continued to grow.
“We painted the walls in the building through Thanksgiving to get the area ready for the tables for the program,” she said. “That building is older and it just needs a little more love and care and we actually had one of our aides, Jennifer Hall, volunteer and she painted all the walls. Once the walls were painted, I painted the doors.”
The weekend returning from Thanksgiving break, they began prepping the Christmas area.
“We ended up having 16 tables, representing different countries and also Kwanzaa,” Brown said. “It was a great experience for everyone who came.”
The venture was called the Holiday Airways, Inc. where different volunteers guided students through the Christmas Around the World setup.
“We used props in several of the displays that the students could take home – like China with their ribbon wands and Israel with their chocolate coins,” Brown said. “This would help them remember how different countries celebrate Christmas and also inspire the love of learning.”
