CULLMAN, Ala. – After their yearly dance workshop and social, dancers and organizers of “Kicking Cancer in Cullman” donated proceeds to the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation – a fitting beneficiary, since many dancers, including instructor Sherry Boatright, are breast cancer survivors themselves.
“I’m a breast cancer survivor, and the exciting thing to me has always been that all of our instructors that day are breast cancer survivors. So that makes it special for me,” said Boatright.
Judy Grissom, who accepted the donation on behalf of the Bosom Buddies, said, “We’re so grateful to these ladies; they add so much charm, beauty and grace to our Little Pink Dress program when they come. But we’re grateful for their participation in raising money, too, because this helps so many people in Cullman County: 100% of everything we get goes to the people of Cullman County.”
Stephanie Neal of the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center said while she’s honored the center is able to host the dancers, it means more to her that so many of them are breast cancer survivors, noting a “full circle” moment of coming out the other side of cancer.
“It touched my heart, because everything they raise stays in the county and helps people who are still battling it, going through it,” she explained.
Boatright shared that it’s no one-woman show; the dancers, along with several corporate and church sponsors like Traditions Bank and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, help by offsetting costs, maximizing the proceeds for Bosom Buddies. A final donation of $2,262 was given on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, to benefit cancer patients in the community.
