CULLMAN, Ala. – Paint, hot glue and other crafting supplies lined the tables, crafters and hobbyists filtered in and Crafternoon was underway at the Cullman County Public Library (CCPL) on a recent Thursday afternoon. As part of its community outreach, in addition to monthly children’s activities and various fun happenings, CCPL holds crafting events hosted by staff or community members.
Cullman County Public Library System Circulation Manger Laura Benton was the mastermind behind the most recent Thursday event’s craft, dreaming up an ornament- themed door hanger.
Benton said, “As you can see, it’s made from all Dollar Tree supplies. We have pizza pans for the ornament, cut contact paper for the design and little wooden pallet signs for the hanger. We have everything in stations, so they start here at table 1 to paint their wood hanger, then they move over to the main part of the hanger while that dries.”
Participants laughed and chatted as they used hot glue to affix red and green bows to their creations, swapping stories about children, life and everything in between. Compliments flowed, praising color schemes and bow-making abilities.
Janice Cook, part-time reference librarian, said, “This is a fun event we do; we do it often. We have had all kinds of people volunteer. Sometimes it’s one of our patrons. We had one woman volunteer who folded the pages of a book and it ended up as an angel or a heart.”
Crafternoons are open to the public, library members and non-members alike and are held at the CCPL the second Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. The next crafting event on Nov. 30 will be a bonus Crafternoon, beginning at 4 p.m. Patrons will have the chance to make a Mason jar lighted snow globe. All materials are provided free of charge, courtesy of the CCPL.
The library is located at 200 Clark St. NE. It is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Any questions regarding Crafternoons or other community activities can be directed to the main library number at 256-734-2720 during regular business hours.
