CCBOE recognizes faculty, staff, former students

CULLMAN, Ala. – At its meeting on Nov. 9, the Cullman County School Board recognized a handful of individuals for their service and dedication to Cullman County Schools.

E5 Exceptional Award recipients have to be nominated by a coworker or faculty or staff member for going above and beyond their job expectations. Vinemont Elementary School Guidance Counselor Lanza Willoughby, Fairview Elementary School Assistant Principal Robert Strane, Good Hope Primary School Custodian Sherry Rainwater and Cold Springs High School Teacher  Stephanie Blair were all recognized for their hard work and dedication to students and their respective schools.

Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette also recognized two former students. Barbers Isaac Ludwig and Dustin Moore have been travelling throughout Cullman County, visiting local schools and providing free haircuts to students and others. The duo also made a stop at the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

“When I talk to them, they just want to give back, they want to make a difference with young people,” Barnette said, “They come in and they’re donating haircuts, but they’re taking the time to talk with the kids and encourage them. We really want to thank them and we appreciate them.”

Vinemont Elementary School was also praised for its selection as one of 12 schools across the state recognized as an Alabama Science of Reading Spotlight School by the Alabama Reading Initiative.

The Superintendent’s Report included a reminder that second nine weeks’ progress reports will go home to caregivers on Nov. 17. Schools are dismissed for Thanksgiving Break from Nov. 20- 24, with 12-month employees working Nov. 20-21.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved the appointment of Tracie White as a Child Nutrition Program worker at Holly Pond School
  • Approved the Transfer of Elizabeth Watwood from Assistant Principal at Hanceville Elementary School to the position of Contracted Principal at Hanceville Middle School, effective Jan. 2, 2024
  • Approved a bid from Cook’s Pest Control to install a new Termite System in Cold Springs’ new gymnasium
  • Approved Living Water Utilities to manage wastewater plants and lift stations
  • Approved a maintenance department request to declare three vehicles surplus, for sale or disposal
  • Approved a donation of a Ford Econoline Van from the Technology department to the Cullman Area Technology Academy for their Auto-Mechanic programs
  • Approved a bid presented by Bresco to replace serving lines and an oven in West Point High School’s lunchroom
  • Approved Sept 2023’s financial statements
  • Approved Sept 2023’s bills and salaries equal to $19,709,107.45
  • Approved out of state field trip requests from Good Hope High School, Vinemont Elementary School, and Good Hope High School
  • Approved a request from West Point Middle School to pay the following for additional summer coaching duties, to be paid by local funds: Cody Harris, Anthony Pace, Phillip Robinson, Michael Williams and David Stokes
  • Approved Lori Warden as West Point Elementary Afterhours Personnel to be paid by local funds
  • Approved compensation to be paid by local funds for Kimberly Kanaday as the Hanceville Middle School Basketball Bookkeeper
  • Approved CATA’s request to pay Kayla Manning for marketing and social media duties, to be paid by local funds
  • Approved the compensation of Teri Weaver for sponsoring Hanceville High School’s National Honor Society

The next regularly scheduled CCBOE meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 14, in the CCBOE meeting room, with the work session beginning at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting immediately following.
