ADDISON, Ala. — The Addison Lady Bulldogs, the top ranked team in Alabama class 1A, hosted area foe, Decatur Heritage Lady Eagles. Addison won all three sets, 25-11, 25-14 and 25-19 to secure the victory. Addison has swept the Lady Eagles in both matches this year.
The first set started out with the Ladies from Heritage taking a quick 2-0 lead. Addison was then led by the serve of Katie Barrett as she served for eight consecutive points to take an 9-2 lead. With the score standing at 11-4, Addison, led by the serves of Dacey Baker and Brooklyn McCurley, extended the lead to 19-5. The teams played the remainder of the first set fairly evenly and Addison came away with the first set victory 25-11. Barrett and Baker had several kills while Hadley Butler and Bailee Ory had numerous digs.
The second set had Decatur Heritage starting off fast garnering a 7-5 lead. It looked a little like the Lady Bulldogs played a little sloppy starting off. Maybe taking the girls from Heritage a little too lightly. After a Lady Bulldog timeout, Addison settled down a bit and led by the serve of McCurley and the defense of Baker and Lauryn Cunningham Addison went on to win 7 out of 8 points to take the 12-6 lead. The Ladies from Heritage wouldn’t back down from the top ranked Lady Dawgs and showed them they came to play. Decatur Heritage cut the lead to 15-13 and then the defending state champs got serious. Addison finished the game on a 10-1 run to take the set, 25-14. Addison was led by Butler and McCurley with the serves and Ava Bartlett and Barrett on defense.
The third and final set looked like the Lady Bulldogs had finally woken up and were about to put the Lady Eagles to sleep. Addison jumped out big with Cunningham and Barrett serving the Lady Dawgs to an 11-1 lead. But, the Lady Eagles, once again, refused to just fly away. The Lady Eagles showed a lot of heart and even though they were outmatched via talent, they showed grit and fought back. The Lady Eagles outscored the girls from Addison 11-6 to cut the lead to 17-12. Addison, refocused, went on to look like they were going to close out the game by bringing the score to 24-12. But you guessed it, the Lady Bulldogs again looked disinterested and didn’t close the Lady Eagles out. Heritage scored seven straight points to cut it to 24-19 when Addison took the last point to win the set and the match 25-19.
Addison improved their record to 30-6 and has already locked up the area championship. Addison will travel to Danville tomorrow night for a tri-meet with Danville and West Morgan.
