HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville Bulldogs welcomed the Red Devils of Lawrence County to Ray Talley Stadium to cap off their homecoming week Friday night and the Bulldogs celebrated with a 32-17 win over the Red Devils.
Hanceville received the opening kick-off and went three and out, but the Bulldog defense forced a turnover on downs. Hanceville was forced to punt after putting together a promising drive but on the first play from scrimmage for the Red Devils, Hanceville’s Eli Clements got the ball right back to the Bulldog offense after recovering a fumble. Two plays later, Marquies Leeth put the Bulldogs ahead 7-0 with a 29-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
Hanceville’s defense forced another quick punt and midway through the second quarter, Hunter Black found Ashton Hurst for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 14-0. The Red Devils answered with a touchdown pass of their own to cut the lead to 14-7 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Lawrence County tied the game at 14 with a touchdown run but Hanceville answered back on the ensuing possession when Leeth punched one into the end zone from 5 yards out to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-14 midway through the third quarter.
The Bulldogs found the endzone again late in the third quarter and Leeth’s third touchdown of the night put the Bulldogs up 26-14 headed into the fourth. Lawrence County drove down into Hanceville territory, but the Bulldog defense stepped up to stop them on fourth and goal. Black connected with Ashton Hurst for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 32-14 and Lawrence County was able to get a late field goal on the board, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hanceville and the Bulldogs secured a 32-17 win.
Hanceville will stay home next for a big regional battle with the Good Hope Raiders.
