GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Addison traveled to James W. Shabel Stadium in lovely Good Hope, Alabama to play a fun, physical non-region game Friday night. This game has actually been played for several consecutive years and the games are very well-attended and are usually close, hard-fought ball games. This game was no exception, and in a nip and tuck affair, Addison was able to hold off the Raiders 22-17.
Addison kicked it off to the Raiders and were able to force a three and out. Good Hope was also playing without several players who were injured.
Addison set the tone early as they wanted to show their 4A neighbors to the East that this 1A school came to play. Addison took over at their own 46-yard line and 11 plays later, QB Jed Wilkins ran it in from 13-yards out for the game’s first score. The key play on the drive was Wilkins scrambling for a 14-yard gain on fourth and 10. Wilkins then found Jacob McLamb for the two-point conversion pass after a mad scramble and hail Mary throw to the end zone. McLamb came down with the ball surrounded by two Raiders. At the 4:08 mark of the first quarter, Addison led 8-0.
Good Hope responded on their next drive by driving down to the Bulldog 39-yard line but were stopped on fourth down. Tucker Malin was the workhorse for the drive as he toted the rock 3 times for 30 yards.
Addison’s next possession got down to the Raider 39-yard line when Tyler Cone stripped the ball from the Bulldog running back for the recovered fumble.
Good Hope then put on a masterful drive as they traveled 68 yards on 14 plays for the score. The Raiders did it the old-fashioned way as they only completed one pass during the drive. Good Hope ran the ball and Addison had no answer. Cone took it in from 3 yards out for the touchdown. Ayden Black accounted for 37-yards on the drive. Black also ran in the two-point conversion that tied the score at 8 with 2:42 to go in the first half.
It didn’t take the Bulldogs long to answer as Wilkins found a wide-open Braden Luker for a 34-yard touchdown pass on their series second play. This was set up by Wilkins scampering for 34-yards on first down. The two-point was no good and Addison took a 14-8 lead with only 1:48 to go in the half.
The Raiders answered the bell as Black found Carter Rutherford for 9 yards, then found Malin down the sideline for 47 more yards. Malin was pushed out at the Bulldog 7-yard line. The Bulldogs were able to keep the Raiders out of the end zone, but Brayden Cooper kicked a 25-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-11 and that was the score when the first half came to a close.
The second half started off with an exchange of possessions as neither offense could move the ball. Addison then gifted the Raiders with a backwards pass turnover in which Raider Isaac Bagwell recovered the fumble at Bulldog 43-yard line.
The Raiders then gashed the Bulldogs on runs of 7, 17 and 10 yards to put the ball down inside the Addison 9-yard line. Black then ran a draw and it appeared that he was going to score when Kayden Dyson stripped the ball and recovered the fumble inside the Bulldog 1-yard line.
Good Hope’s defense held Addison to only 2-yards on three plays and forced a punt. The Raiders then took over deep inside Addison territory at the Bulldog 29-yard line. After the Raiders moved down to the Bulldog 11-yard line by running the ball, they were facing a touch fourth and four call. Addison forced an incomplete pass and took over possession with 11:03 left in the game.
After several unsuccessful possessions by both teams, Good Hope took over their own 36-yard line with 4:52 to go in the game. Good Hope was facing a long fourth and six call at their own 40-yard line and decided to go for it. The play resulted in an incomplete pass, but a pass interference penalty was called on Addison, it could have gone either way depending on which side you were sitting on. Raider fans were ecstatic and Bulldog fans were furious. Good Hope took over with a new set of downs at the Bulldog 45 but couldn’t gain any more yards and failed on another fourth down call with 2:30 to go in the game.
Addison struck quickly again, as Wilkins ran around the end down the sideline and crossed the field, eluding about half the Raider team as he scored from 53-yards out for the game sealing touchdown. Elijah Roberts found McLamb for the two-point conversion and Addison led 22-11 with 1:58 seconds to go.
Good Hope wasn’t going down without a fight and Black drove the Raiders down the field finally completing an 8-yard touchdown to Cone on the game’s final play. In what was a pretty good high school football game, Addison held on to win 22-17.
Both teams have things that they can correct, Addison’s turnovers and near turnovers and Good Hopes numerous penalties on the night.
Addison 4-2 (3-1 region) will host Meek next Friday for what should the battle for second place in their region. Good Hope 1-5 (0-2 region) will travel to Hanceville for a nice region/county match up as well.
