BREMEN, Ala. — Cold Springs’ Hollyn Bruer will be a freshman this upcoming basketball season and will be on the JV team this year. She played some on the varsity squad last year as well and has had a great experience during her time on both teams and with her sister, Ella Bruer. She has learned so much from this experience so far.

“I love my teammates and my coaches. Getting to go to the state tournament was so special, especially going there with my sister. It was an experience I’ll never forget,” Bruer said. “I’ve learned that you have got to play as a team. You have got to connect outside of practice and games. I’ve learned you have to put in the work in outside of the season to bring back something to offer and put on the table to help my team. I’ve also learned that every role on the team is important. My role on JV as a contributor is just as important as my role on varsity, helping prepare the team for a state run. Although Ella drives me crazy sometimes, getting to share this time with her has been amazing. It’s helped us grow together and become better friends.”

Hollyn got to experience going to state last season and soaked up as much as she can from it and from an amazing group of girls.

“It was truly an amazing experience and we had lots of laughs. I’ve learned that not everyone gets that opportunity and to be thankful. I’ve also learned that it’s hard to make it that far and to walk away second-best, makes me want to work harder,” Bruer said. “They are all so talented. They have all taught me so much, each one of them. I’ve learned teamwork, sportsmanship, and becoming a leader. I’m also working on my attitude (laughs). I’ve also learned to let mistakes go and make it up on the next play. Don’t forget to box out.”

Hollyn is so blessed to play for some amazing coaches and has learned so much from them.

“My coaches are the absolute best. They have both taught me so much and also have helped me outside of basketball. I love them so much and they have helped me not only grow as a basketball player, but also as a person. Coach West has taught me that giving less than your best is unacceptable. She doesn’t put up with that. If you don’t give it your best, you’re not only letting yourself down, but you’re letting your team down. Coach Adams has taught me sportsmanship and becoming a leader. I’ve learned so much from them.”

She has improved her game so much during her time on JV and varsity so far and will continue to put in the work as she gets ready for this upcoming season. She talked about her goals and the team goals.

“I feel like I have come a long way since my first varsity game. My teammates have helped me get to where I am and I can’t forget my coaches, pushing me to be the best I can be. I will continue to become a leader and help my team get to the top spot,” she said. “My individual goals are to talk on defense, go in strong when driving to the paint, and continue to work on my midrange shots. Some of my team goals are becoming JV county champs and becoming the state champions for varsity.”

Hollyn thinks this will be another special season for the Lady Eagles and she talked about her role models growing up.

“We have five seniors that plan to go out with a blue map, and we plan to help them get there. It’s going to be a fun year. My team is very special to me, and it will be amazing for us to win that blue map,” she said. “I’ve watched players from the past, like Camryn Crider, Elizabeth Hill, Toni West, and even Madison Bruer. I look up to Ella too. She’s taught me a whole lot. I’ve learned to talk on defense, always be positive, never hang your head, and most importantly, never give up.”

She talked about the best advice that someone ever gave her and what she’s looking forward to the most this upcoming season.

“Always be positive and your attitude reflects on everyone else,” she said. “I’m looking forward to growing with my teammates and becoming a better player. I’m also looking forward to getting that blue map.”
