HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hundreds of fans of classic family friendly comedy piled into the Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre at Wallace State Community College on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, as the Senior Outreach Players brought golden age characters from shows like “Andy Griffith,” “Mama’s Family” and “Hee Haw” to the black box stage in a medley rendition known as “Mayberry Goes to Hee Haw.” If you missed it, don’t worry; they’re doing it all over again on Thursday, Oct. 26.

This performance was extra special, however, due to the large stage, lighting and music scores previously unavailable at the smaller venues that Senior Outreach Players are used to performing at, shared Director and Playwright Jamie Looney.

“I wish you could see how proud the seniors were after their performance,” smiled Looney, “You could see how happy they were about their family coming to watch. They really grew closer and developed friendships with one another.”

On a less-than-stellar note, Senior Outreach Players mainstays Jim and Ann Anderton unfortunately were unable to perform as planned as Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton due to an auto accident the day before the show. Looney shared that the cast came together, hands clasped in prayer, Looney noting, “The whole cast loves them so much!”

The next performance of “Mayberry Goes to Hee Haw” will be Thursday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center located at 1625 Cleveland Ave. SW. Tickets are $10.
