1 killed in late-night shooting, active manhunt underway

CULLMAN, Ala. — According to Cullman Police Department Director of Communications Adam Clark, at approximately 10:55 p.m. Sunday evening a shooting took place near the 200 block of Hickory Ave SW.

“A male subject was critically injured, and the suspect fled the scene,” Clark said. “The suspect, 36-year-old, John Wesley Drozda, is at large and considered armed and dangerous.”

Clark stated the injured subject later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The decedent was identified by Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick as Thomas James Brannon, 37, of Cullman. Kilpatrick stated Brannon was sent to Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy.

CPD asks to please use caution and call 911 if you come in contact with Drozda.

This is believed to be an isolated incident.

UPDATE: September 18th at 4:30 p.m.

The suspect in Sunday night’s shooting has been apprehended.

John Wesley Drozda, 36, was taken into custody Monday afternoon at the Red Roof Inn in Hartselle.

The CPD posted on Facebook: “Thank you to Hartselle Police Department and Cullman PD Investigation Division for all (sic) the hard work on the case.”

Drozda has been charged with reckless murder.
