BREMEN, Ala. – The Holly Pond Broncos traveled across the county to face the Eagles of Cold Springs Friday night and with the rain coming down, the Eagles flew to an impressive, 42-7 win over the Broncos.
Cold Springs received the opening kickoff and moved the ball well behind the strong running of Matt Williams, but the drive stalled later in the first quarter and the Eagles were forced to turn the ball over on downs.
Holly Pond’s Brody Howard got the Broncos moving, taking the ball out to their own 45-yard line. The Broncos got caught holding and the penalty moved the ball back to their own 38 but from there, quarterback Sawyer Olinger found Boston Gibbs breaking across the middle and Gibbs took it the distance for a touchdown to put the Broncos up 7-0 with 1:53 left in the first quarter.
The Bronco defense steps up again with John Gibbs picking off a Cold Springs pass at their own 44. But the Broncos drive stalls and the Eagles take over.
Starting near midfield, Williams was the first to get the Eagles on the board with a 51-yard touchdown run that trimmed the lead to 7-6.
The Eagles defense shut down the Broncos in the second quarter and their offense put up 16 unanswered points with Williams scoring from 3 yards out and a touchdown on a quick screen to wrap up the scoring in the first half. At the break, Cold Springs led Holly Pond 22-7.
The Eagles never had to punt in the game and their defense dominated the Broncos offense in the second half. The Eagles offense added 14 more points in the second half when Samuel Turner scored on a 20-yard run and Williams added another touchdown run from 3 yards out.
With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Holly Pond fumbled the ball on the Eagles 20-yard line and Turner scooped it up and raced 80 yards untouched the other way to cap off an exciting, 42-7 win for Cold Springs.
The Eagles improve to 2-0 with the win and will be looking for their second win of the season when they travel to Sulligent for their region opener next week. Holly Pond (0-2) will be back on the road next week as well for a regional matchup at Locust Fork.
