Trivia through the Decades brings over $7K for Cullman County Commission on Aging

CULLMAN, Ala. – The competition was intense and the pressure immense as 24 teams gathered in the Traditions Bank Operations Building on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, for Cullman County Commission on Aging’s inaugural fundraiser, “Trivia through the Decades.” The event boasted four rounds of head-scratching trivia with questions created by local comedian and trivia host, Matt Mitchell. With a $600 grand prize and bragging rights on the line, the heat was on.

The evening started off with attendees mingling and browsing the silent auction table, which was packed with spa experiences, golf certificates and even hunting experiences. A down-home style dinner of pulled pork, baked beans and potato salad created by a partnership between The Butcher and Williams Barbecue soon graced the tables and attendees dug in, washing it down with sweet iced tea, preparing for the battle of wits to come.

As Mitchell set everything up, he mentioned, “I love being able to work with the Commission on Aging, they do such amazing things for the elderly in Cullman. I’m just honored that they even asked me!”

Dinner plates were cleared, and the game was on. Tables whispered answers quietly to one another, arguing over puzzling questions about Mayor McCheese, Billy Ocean, Beanie Babies and 2000s romcoms. In the end, the team Tequila Mockingbird brought home the gold – or the presentation-sized prize check donated by Tesha Brewer of State Farm – with the team Fleetwood Mac and Cheese coming in a close second with a 1-point difference.

Stephanie Lawson, executive director of the Cullman County Commission on Aging, expressed her gratitude for the community pulling together to make the event a success.

“I’m just so thankful to our event sponsors: Tesha Brewer of State Farm, Traditions Bank, The Butcher and Williams Barbecue. All of our silent auction sponsors, we couldn’t have had that without them! And of course, my team at Commission on Aging. Every person showed up to provide their support to the seniors in our community. I hope everyone had a great time!”
