VINEMONT, Ala. – Vinemont seniors gathered once again in the Vinemont Community Center for a few hours of lunch and activities hosted by the Town of South Vinemont. The scene on Monday, Aug. 21, was bustling as seniors made good use of a self-serve taco bar loaded with all the fixins’ and settled in for fierce rounds of bingo.

August’s senior lunch was the largest gathering yet, according to Vinemont Councilwoman Bonnie Goodwin, with dozens of seniors packing out the center. With Vinemont being one of the few offshoots in the county without a full-time senior center, the monthly lunches are crucial for fellowship, fun and just plain old getting out of the house.

“We usually have donations or sponsors (for lunch), but this time the council did it ourselves,” Goodwin beamed, gesturing to the massive spread. “We’ve had a really good turnout this time, close to 50 today!”

Goodwin is hopeful about the future of the monthly lunches, sharing that attendance has steadily grown the more that word gets out.

“People are just now learning about it, so we might have to scoot these tables closer together soon!” she laughed.

Vinemont Mayor Radginal “Reggie” Dodson shared the same hopes, expressing how happy he is that the center is being put to good use.

“I helped build this building, and I’m proud that it’s being put to use. People even my age are coming here to shoot the bull and enjoy it, you know? It’s just fun getting to see something enjoyed,” Dodson nodded.

The Town of South Vinemont hosts the senior citizens lunch from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at the community center, which is located at 88 Ridgeway St., Cullman, Alabama, 35058. The lunch is open to seniors aged 55 and older.
