U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPION! Alabama’s Nick Dunlap wins 123rd United States Amateur Championship

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Alabama men’s golfer Nick Dunlap outlasted Ohio State’s Neal Shipley 4&3 to claim the 2023 United States Amateur Championship. In doing so, Dunlap joins former great Jerry Pate as the only two Crimson Tide golfers to bring the hardware back to Tuscaloosa.

Dunlap has now claimed both the U.S. Junior Amateur (2021) and U.S. Amateur championships (2023) and joins Tiger Woods as the only two golfers to achieve the feat.

• The two finalists finished the opening 18 holes of the 36-hole championship match tied following a Neal Shipley birdie on No. 18
• Nick Dunlap won back-to-back holes on No. 3 and No. 4 in the second round (Nos. 21 and 22 overall) to take a 2up advantage
• The Crimson Tide sophomore would go on to win four of the eight holes between No. 3 and No. 10 to take an insurmountable 4up lead
• Dunlap secured the victory on No. 15 (33^rd hole overall)
• After finishing 41^st in stroke play (72-70/142), Nick Dunlap’s match play wins include: World No.1-ranked Gordon Sargent (2&1) in the round of 64, Connor Jones (4&2) in the round of 32, Bowen Mauss (5&4) in the round of 16, Jackson Koivun (19 holes) in the quarterfinals and Parker Bell in the semis
• The win is Dunlap’s third major tournament victory and all but ensures him exemptions into the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship in 2024
• He was also named to the United States Walker Cup Team in July
• Currently ranked No. 9 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings
• Has had a strong summer on the amateur circuit winning consecutive major championships in the 61^st Northeast Amateur and the 123^rd North & South Amateur
• 2023 Second Team PING All-American and All-Region First Team
• Named a First Team All-SEC performer as we as an all-freshman team honoree
• Led Alabama in average strokes per round at 70.35, which ranks as the second lowest per-round single-season average in program history
• Additionally, his -0.95 average vs. par set a program record while his led UA with 17 rounds in the 60s (17)
