Day 2 of Colony Day celebration brings the meat, heat and fellowship

COLONY, Ala. – Dozens of event tents and RVs lined the perimeter of Colony Park on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023,or day two of Colony Day. The community park was packed with attendees traveling from states away and just right down the road. The air, thick with humidity, meshed with the delectable scent of smoked and grilled meats as attendees blasted R&B classics. Relatives, friends and strangers alike were cutting up as they set up tables of fixins’ for meat coming off the grill.

“The turnout is great!” exclaimed Councilwoman Jasmine Cole, coordinator of the third consecutive Colony Day celebration, as she gestured to the park around her.

“Everybody is just talking and reminiscing… the grownups are getting ready for this party at 9 o’clock, meat is coming off. Folks are done grillin’, and they’re just chillin’!” laughed Cole.

The fiercest competition of the afternoon was the car show; a variety of classics and newer models were on display on the park grounds with Jimmy Kirk taking home bragging rights for first place. TeeJay Wilson was a close second, with William Robinson rounding it out in third.

LaShan Johnson Carpenter of 4 My Queen Boutique, who was set up in prime real estate behind the Sugar and Ice food truck, shared her thoughts on Colony Day. “It’s amazing! We’re having a lot of fun, it’s HOT,” laughed Carpenter, fanning herself, quickly following with, “But it’s fun!”
