BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football team begins its second week of fall camp on Monday night with just 24 days remaining until hosting North Carolina A&T at Protective Stadium on Aug. 31.
WEEK 1 RECAP:
- Jermaine Brown Jr. has received all the preseason accolades (deservedly so), but the running back room is arguable the deepest it has ever been. New addition Isaiah Jacobs has shown a tremendous combination of speed, power and agility, while redshirt junior Lee Witherspoon continues to provide valuable snaps and reliability. A pair of talented redshirt freshmen in Taven Curry and Lee Beebe continue to develop, and graduate transfer Demetrius Battle, standing at 6’0” 245lbs has proven to be a wrecking ball that is tough to bring down.
- Mac McWilliams headlines the cornerbacks and has looked strong throughout the first week of camp. Current Detroit Lion Starling Thomas V left a vacant starting position at the other cornerback position and a lot of players are in the mix, including AD Diamond, who has had multiple interceptions this camp, BJ Mayes, a transfer from Incarnate Word who has played very well in week one, veteran Colby Dempsey who saw playing time last year, redshirt freshman Trey Miles and true freshman Ricky Lee III.
- The defensive line has always been a strength for the Blazers and 2023 should be no exception. Standouts Fish McWilliams and Tyrique Howard anchor the interior, and steady veteran Michael Fairbanks II has continued to make plays. The emergence of Joker Gill has provided an added boost, while Kevin Penn also looks poised for a big role in his final year as a Blazer. Some young Blazers in Florida State transfer Antavious Woody, along with true freshmen Emmanuel Waller, Miquon Merriweather, Jonathan Allen and Eamon Smalls have provided this position with exceptional depth.
