CULLMAN, Ala. – Barry Thompson, a local Certified Public Accountant (CPA), was arrested on July 17 and charged with four counts of theft of services in the fourth degree. It is believed that there may be additional victims involved.
Cullman Police Chief David Nassetta anticipates more charges as more individuals come forward. Nassetta stated that since the arrest, an increasing number of people have expressed concerns that their taxes were not filed properly.
“He accepted their payment but failed to file their taxes,” Nassetta explained. “We are currently reviewing the new reports that have been submitted.”
Nassetta advised individuals who have filed their taxes with Thompson and have not received a tax refund to check the status of their return to ensure it has been filed with the IRS. If the return has not been filed, affected individuals are urged to visit the police station and obtain a report to be filed with the IRS.
The Cullman Police Department issued the following statement via their Facebook page:
“If you had your tax returns completed by Barry Thompson, CPA within the past year and have not received your tax refund, please verify the status of your return with the IRS. If the return has not been filed, kindly visit the Cullman Police Department to discuss this matter with us.”
Earlier this year, on Jan. 27, 2023, the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy revoked Thompson’s CPA certificate due to dishonesty, fraud, or gross negligence, failure to respond to a Board inquiry, and conduct deemed discreditable to the public accounting profession.
