Attorney General Steve Marshall honors fallen lieutenant
HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Close family members, former coworkers and elected officials gathered in the Hanceville City Council chambers on Wednesday morning to pay tribute to the late Hanceville Lieutenant Kevin Pounders, who tragically passed away from COVID in January 2022.
The ceremony commenced with a brief address from retired Hanceville Chief of Police Bob Long, who reminisced about Pounders’ character. Long shared that despite Pounders’ rugged exterior, he was a gentle giant with a heart of gold.
“He was probably one of the best investigators I ever had the pleasure of working with,” Long solemnly expressed.
Attorney General Steve Marshall took the podium and emphasized the scarcity of individuals like Pounders in the country. Marshall remarked, “We don’t have enough Kevin Pounders in this country – someone who is willing to serve in the military, in this department… and in both of those roles, he was willing to risk his life for complete strangers.” Marshall highlighted the fact that first responders often stood on the frontlines of the COVID battle, paying the ultimate price, yet their contributions were insufficiently recognized.
Marshall also took a moment to acknowledge the enduring impact that Pounders’ life had and continues to have, extending beyond his advocacy for victims. He stated, “There were individuals whom Kevin held accountable, and their lives changed for the better. So while he may not be with us today, his legacy endures and will continue to have a positive and profound influence on the people in this community.”
