Allan Douglas Samp, age 51, of Vinemont, Alabama, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023, after a battle with cancer. He was born July 7, 1972, in Michigan.

Allan moved to Alabama in 1976 with his family. He attended Cullman City Schools from EES to CHS.

He was a three-sport, three-year Varsity letterman in cross country, basketball, and soccer. He loved playing basketball for his favorite coach, John Tekulve, known as Coach “T”.

Allan was a personality hard to forget. He was an actor and dancer at Looney Tavern and a cheerleader at the University of North Alabama where he graduated on the Dean’s list with a BA in Marketing and a BA in Spanish. He loved playing the guitar and wrote many songs which he recorded. He also sang karaoke (many knew him as “Boss”). He mastered martial arts-boxing and loved training his nephews. He was an animal lover and would spend his off time with his beloved Hoss and Rosa.

Allan would help anyone. He worked at Iowa University Hospital, State of Kansas Mental Facility, and in Cullman and Decatur as a CNA. Allan would also make house calls to those bedridden to give them a clean cut and shave. He loved cutting and styling hair and owned his own salon ‘Adonis’ in Hartselle for some years. He was a blessing to so many and loved working with the disadvantaged. He worked for the state of Alabama in the Opelika office as Disability Resource Coordinater.

While Allan did not like big crowds, he was very intimate with everyone he met, attentively listening and making connections. He was known and loved by many, especially his family who will miss him dearly, but know we will be together with Jesus someday.

Survivors include his parents, Kenneth Samp and Laura Samp; sister, Laurie Lynn (Tom) Calligaris; nieces and nephews, Paige (Alex) Chaney, A.J. Washburn, Benjamin Washburn, Eddie Calligaris, and Sophia Calligaris; great-nephews, James Chaney and Kenneth Chaney; special friend, Sonja Croone; and many other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Allan’s name to the Humane Society or charity of your choice.
