UPDATE: Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail clarified Saturday (7/15/23) evening, the property authorized to be demolished is a two-story apartment-style structure near the back of the property which was previously condemned due to fire.
HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council at its meeting on Thursday, July 13, authorized the demolition of a local home. [editors note- see update at the top of this article]. Referred to as the Curvin property, and described as a “snake and rat den” at a previous meeting, the structure has already been condemned.
“The owner of the property signed yesterday a release order for us to enter her property for the purpose of demolishing that building,” said Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail.
The mayor said the owner’s sons expressed the desire to salvage some of the lumber from the home before demolition. The council agreed to issue a 30-day notice to the family.
“We’re going to let them get out what they want, but in 30 days we’re going to be there,” said Nail.
According to the council the home was damaged by a fire, making it unsafe to occupy.
Other business
The council approved the surplus various office furniture, such as desks, for a minimum of $50 per piece.
The council approved the erection of a traffic gate on Stadium Drive.
The council voted to allow City employees who are covered under other insurances to receive a small stipend upon declination of the City health insurance coverage benefit, under the stipulation that they provide proof of insurance every six months after declination. Employees will be notified by memo.
A derelict property on Thrasher Road is up for condemnation; a public notice will be published, and City Attorney Dan Willingham was granted permission to initiate proceedings.
The council received the City’s 2020 financial audit, which it said will be made available to the public.
