Dean Drake Green, 87, passed away on June 28, 2023. Dean was born in Decatur, AL to Bill and Vera Cole Drake. When she was 12 years old, she was joined by her favorite, red-headed sister, Diane. Dean graduated from Decatur High School in 1952 then attended Alabama College (Montevallo).
In 1959, Dean married her sweetheart, Donald Green. They began their family the next year with Drew, followed by Jonathan, and later, while attending graduate school at Texas A&M, they got their “Texas Surprise’, Donna. Dean’s marriage to Don ended just shy of 63 years with his death in July 2022.
Dean was an educator for over 40 years. She taught at Fairview, Cullman College, and retired from Cullman Middle School. Highlights of her teaching career include: many student trips to Washington DC, conducting the annual CMS Veterans’ Day Program, and an unparalleled passion for Scholars Bowl. Her last Scholars Bowl team earned State and National honors!
The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers who made Dean’s final days comfortable, especially Sheila Scott, Jainnie Free, and the staff at Hanceville Nursing Home who cared for Dean during her final days.
Dean was preceded in death by her parents, Vera and Bill; her husband, Donald; and her daughter, Donna. She is survived by her sons, Drew Green and Jonathan (Sherry) Green; sister, Diane (David) Hembree; grandsons, Thomas (Samantha) Green and Cole (Leslie) Kelley; granddaughters, Anna Green and Madison Drew; great-grandson, Eliot Kelley; and great-granddaughter, Quinn Green.
The funeral service will be held at Moss Service Funeral Home on Sunday, July 2, 2023. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. There will be a graveside service for the family.
