CULLMAN, Ala. — In this interview, I talked to Cullman senior soccer standout Abby Morrow. Abby made a lot of great memories playing soccer and feels blessed to have played alongside some great girls and learned from some great coaches during her career. She learned so much from her coaches over the years and was blessed to play with three other great senior players.
“Some of my favorite memories were beating Decatur in penalty kicks and playing in a lot of beach tournaments. It was great. My teammates pushed me to work harder every day and they truly are my best friends,” Morrow said. “My coaches, Luke and Megan Hackbarth, and Jonathan Knappenberger, were extremely supportive and challenged me to work harder every time I was on the field. They taught me how to be mentally tougher and push myself to get better each day. They also taught me the importance of controlling what I can control: my attitude and effort. Even when things aren’t going my way, I can focus on giving 100% and having a positive attitude. This is definitely something that will stick with me as I continue my soccer career in college. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play at the next level without them.”
She added,
“It was so much fun. I have played with Mimi, Anna Beth, and Shayley since I was eight years old, so this season was very special and bittersweet. Those girls really are like sisters to me. I learned a lot about the importance of having good team chemistry. Over the years, we definitely had some highs and lows where we relied on each other to lift one another up. These girls taught me the importance of having good relationships on and off the field, hard work, and the importance of having someone to push you to grow and work harder every day.”
Abby was a part of some great clubs at Cullman and learned some things about being in those clubs.
“I was a member of the Student Government Association, Key Club, National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, and HOSA: Future Health Professionals. All of those clubs I was a part of at Cullman High School have given me a lot of opportunities to give back to my community and even reach those out of the United States during a service project for Spanish Honors Society,” Morrow said. “In HOSA, I was able to compete in medical competitions at the state level and learn more about career paths in the healthcare field. My experience in HOSA was super impactful as it helped me to decide if I was truly interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. I learned so much about the medical field, specifically dentistry as Dental Science was my chosen competitive event for the state competition. I was also able to graduate as a Certified Medical Assistant, so I can start working while I’m in college.”
She added,
“My overall experience in being involved in those clubs taught me so much about how to be a good leader and how I can have a positive impact on my fellow classmates and community.”
Abby talked about her favorite high school memories. Cullman will hold a very special place in her heart and will remember some things about being there.
“My favorite high school memories were homecoming week my senior year and the winter formal,” she said. “Cullman is so special because it provided me with so many great opportunities that will allow me to be successful as I continue my education at Brimingham-Southern College. Not only that, but I have made so many great friendships over the years that will last me a lifetime. I will always remember the fun events I was able to participate in during homecoming week and the amazing time I had as a member of the soccer program.”
Abby will deeply miss being at Cullman next year and will take away so much from going there. She also talked about some of her favorite club memories and she also gave some advice to the upcoming freshmen.
“I will miss my friends the most as we will be attending different colleges,” she said. “During my time at Cullman, I have learned so much about the importance of hard work and I feel much more prepared for college courses. Some of my favorite club memories would have to be traveling to Montgomery for the HOSA state competition with all of my friends. My advice to them would be to enjoy every second of it. It really does fly by. Surround yourself with a good, supportive group of friends who will help you grow as a person.”
Abby talked about some special role models that she had growing up, the best advice that she was ever given, and some scholarships that she received.
“I’ve always really looked up to my parents. They are such hard workers and are so supportive of everything I’m passionate about. They’ve given me great advice about the importance of working hard in order to achieve my goals and trusting that God has a plan for my life,” she said. “I received a Presidental scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College, as well as the McWane Honors Scholarship. Getting these scholarships mean a lot to me as they are a reflection of the hard work I’ve put in during my high school career.”
