SUMITON, Ala. — The Cold Springs Lady Eagles traveled to Sumiton Christian for the Class 2A, Area 12 Wednesday and unfortunately for Eagle fans, Cold Springs was eliminated after dropping a pair of games to Locust Fork.

Locust Fork 18 – Cold Springs 17 (2A, Area 12)

Cold Springs and Locust Fork went back-and-forth in what was a high-scoring affair in their Class 2A, Area 12 matchup. The Lady Eagles got the scoring started in their opening at-bats as Sadie Smith lined a two-run double to center field to give them an early 2-0 lead. Adriana Young followed that up with an RBI single to center field and Hope Speegle later added a two-run double of her own to center field to give Cold Springs a 5-0 lead. The Lady Hornets responded in their half as a pair of RBI singles, a two-run double, and a two-run single gave them a 6-5 lead.

Cold Springs got the lead right back in the top of the second as Kortnie Williams hit a sacrifice fly and Smith added an RBI single to give them a 7-6 lead. This would be one of several lead changes in the game. Locust Fork put up five runs in their half to grab an 11-7 lead, but the Lady Eagles cut into the deficit in the top of the third. Brooklyn Ingram hit a two-out RBI single, and Williams followed that up with a two-run single to make it an 11-10 game. Locust Fork made it 12-10 on a sacrifice fly in their half.

Cold Springs tied it up at 12 on a two-run single by Ciara Calvert in the top of the fourth, then Ingram added a two-run double to give them a 14-12 lead. The Lady Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth as Cameron Baty crossed the plate to make it a 15-12 game, but the Lady Hornets cut it to 15-13 on a one-out RBI single. Cold Springs put up another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Ingram.

Locust Fork, though, tied the game up in their half on a three-run home run and later added an RBI single to give them a 17-16 lead. The Lady Eagles stayed alive with two outs as Young scored on a Lady Hornet error to tie the game up at 17, but Locust Fork hit a game-winning RBI double in their half. Cold Springs ended up dropping a heartbreaker to Locust Fork 18-17.

Ingram finished with three hits and four RBIs in the game for Cold Springs. Smith (two hits) and Williams (one hit) each posted three RBIs in the loss. Calvert and Speegle each added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Young collected three hits and an RBI in the contest.

Locust Fork 23 – Cold Springs 2 (2A, Area 12)

Locust Fork got in the run column first in their opening at-bats on an RBI single, but Cold Springs countered in their half as Ciara Calvert stole home to tie the game up at one. The Lady Hornets, though, quickly broke the game wide open as they scored five runs in the second and four more in the third to take a commanding 10-1 lead. An RBI single by Hope Speegle cut it to 10-2 in the bottom of the third, but Locust Fork put up another 13 runs in the top of the fourth to take a 23-2 lead. The Lady Eagles ended up losing the game to the Lady Hornets 23-2.

Speegle finished with a hit and an RBI for Cold Springs. The Lady Eagles will bring everyone back next year as they will look to make a deep postseason run in 2024.
