CULLMAN, Ala. – On Monday, April 24, Cullman County Public Library System Director Sharon Townson and Cullman County Public Library volunteer Renee Welsh, met with Dodge City Mayor Jason Burney, Councilwoman Teera Johns and Councilman Jerry Lynn to unveil a new Little Free Library in front of Dodge City Town Hall.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota, that promotes neighborhood book exchanges. More than 150,000 public book exchanges are registered with the organization and branded as Little Free Libraries.

According to Welsh, the Little Free Library installations are purchased, assembled and then decorated. They are installed in easily accessible locations for seniors and children. They are weatherproof, which ensures that the books inside are protected.

When asked why he wanted to bring a Little Free Library to Dodge City, Burney said, “It’s important to encourage kids to read more. We want to do what we can to keep the kids reading.”

Each Little Free Library is registered and has a charter number on the front. Participants can download the free app (Little Free Library) and find the closest location. Participants are encouraged to take a book and leave a book, but it’s not required.
