CULLMAN, Ala. — The Lady Bearcats returned home Monday night to host a big local matchup against West Point and it was a tight one through four innings, but Cullman plated four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull and top the Lady Warriors 10-3.
Macayla Wilkins drew a leadoff walk for West Point to lead off the game and moved to second on a single by Macie Brown. Brinlee Phillips’ RBI fielder’s choice brought home Wilkins to give the Lady Warriors the early lead, but Cullman countered in their half. Haley Shannon reached on an error to lead off the inning, then a sacrifice bunt and another Lady Warrior error allowed Shannon to score to tie the game at one. Olivia Britton drew a one-out walk and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Sadie Graham to give the Lady Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
West Point tied the game in the top of the third on a two-out RBI single by Phillips, but Cullman broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth. Sadie Graham drew a walk, then Hattie Graham added a single to left field to put runners on the corners with one out. Hattie Graham stole second and Brooklyn Morton drove in Sadie Graham on an RBI groundout, then Abby Maples lined an RBI double to right field to give the Lady Bearcats a 4-2 lead.
Cullman slowly started to create some distance between them and West Point in the bottom of the fifth. A hit by pitch and a pair of singles loaded the bases with one out, then Sadie Graham drew a walk to force home a run. Hattie Graham followed that up with a sacrifice fly to push the Lady Bearcat lead to 6-2. Morton lined a two-run single to right field as that gave Cullman an 8-2 lead.
The Lady Warriors trimmed it to 8-3 in the top of the sixth on a Lexi Kimbril RBI groundout, but the Lady Bearcats added some more insurance runs in their half as Kylie Stracener hit an RBI triple and Britton added a sacrifice fly. Summer Storey worked around a one-out single to get the final two outs of the game as Cullman ended up getting a 10-3 win at home over West Point.
Morton finished with a hit and three RBIs for Cullman. Stracener and Sadie Graham each added a hit and a pair of RBIs in the game. Hattie Graham ended up with a pair of hits and an RBI. Maples collected a hit and an RBI as well. Britton chipped in with an RBI of her own. Shannon and Reese Hopper each finished with a pair of hits in the contest, while Taylor Au collected a hit as well. Brie Voss went five innings as she allowed four hits and two earned runs, walked three, and struck out five. Storey went the final two innings, giving up just one hit and an unearned run.
For West Point, Phillips finished with a hit and a pair of RBIs. Kimbril added an RBI. Brown ended up with a pair of hits, while Ella Minck and Kara Jones each collected a hit as well.
Cullman will travel to take on Helena and West Point will host Falkville on Tuesday.
