CULLMAN, Ala. – The last session of the spring 2023 class of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Citizens’ Academy was held Saturday, April 15, at the CCSO shooting range.
The session started with Lt. Matt Bales explaining K9 units and how the animals are trained and cared for. According to Bales, the CCSO has five narcotic detector K9s, four tracking K9s and one bomb K9. These K9s provide various services. The tracking K9s primarily find lost individuals and fleeing suspects. The narcotic and bomb K9s search for illegal and dangerous materials throughout the community, including schools.
The Dive Team was also present Saturday. Attendees got to see one of the boats that is used, along with diving equipment. Team members explained the importance of proper training and protocols when on the water.
Members of the SWAT Team provided information about the types of equipment they use, and a brief demonstration of a stun grenade was given.
The last part of the morning was spent allowing academy members access to the gun range. Instructors helped those who wished to practice with guns. They were given proper gun safety training and were allowed to shoot.
The graduation ceremony for the spring 2023 class of the CCSO Citizens’ Academy will take place Tuesday, April 18, at 6 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church.
