James Spann visits Cullman County Child Development Center
VINEMONT, Ala. – Posters with drawings and catchy slogans created by students lined the walls of the Cullman County Child Development Center (CCCDC) gymnasium Thursday morning as the kids anxiously awaited the arrival of their favorite meteorologist, James Spann.
Students and teachers of all ages were thrilled to learn key facts about weather patterns and the water cycle, but more importantly, to meet the man behind de-mystifying weather in Alabama.
CCCDC teacher Summer Walker, the driving force behind Spann’s appearance, said it was a year in the making.
“I reached out to him last year, but he was booked. He’s the man, you know? But he was happy to come out in April.” Walker said the intention behind the appearance was to put students’ minds at ease during this season of severe weather. “With the weather season a lot of our kids are afraid of severe weather. We want them to be weather aware, and to teach them that yes, weather can be scary, but we can fix that concern by being prepared.”
Spann led a fun and down-to-earth presentation, sharing information peppered with crowd interaction and good humor with the engaged students. He said ministering to children and putting their minds at ease about severe weather is a cause close to his heart from his own experience leading children’s ministry and worship, and that it was an honor just to be invited.
“This is a critical ministry. These teachers are heroes, they really are,” he said. “They don’t get enough appreciation, so anything that can be done to encourage them is great. If me showing up to do a program can help someone at this facility have a better day, I’m for it.”
