Fairview 5 – Cold Springs 0 (Softball)
Fairview jumped out to a quick lead to start out the game. A pair of singles and a hit by pitch loaded up the bases with no outs for Ayda Payne, who lined a two-run double to center field to give the Lady Aggies the early 2-0 lead. Later on, with two outs, Addison Phillips hit an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game. It quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel after that as Payne and Cold Springs’s Peyton Kennedy got out of some jams to keep the score at 3-0.
It wouldn’t be until the top of the seventh inning that the score would change. Payne reached on a one-out error, then on the first pitch, Allison Davis lined a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Lady Aggies a 5-0 lead. Cold Springs looked to get something going in their final at-bats. Ciara Calvert and Adriana Young each reached on back-to-back two-out errors to put runners on second and third with two outs, but Payne got Sadie Smith to ground out to end the game as Fairview collected a 5-0 shutout win over the Lady Eagles.
Davis finished with three hits and two RBIs for Fairview. Payne added a hit and a pair of RBIs. Phillips ended up with three hits and an RBI. Emily Benson added three hits of her own, while Kylie Kovar and Jordan Simmons each collected a hit of their own. Payne went the distance for the Lady Aggies as she pitched a two-hit shutout; she walked three and struck out three. For Cold Springs, Calvert and Smith each finished with a hit.
Fairview will travel to take on Hayden and Cold Springs will go to Sumiton Christian on Tuesday.
Holly Pond 10 – Locust Fork 9 (Baseball)
After a scoreless first inning, Holly Pond got in the run column first in the top of the second. Chase Brazelton hit a one-out single, then with two outs, Levi Farr hit an RBI triple to left field to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. They would add to their lead in the top of the third. A single and a walk put runners on first and second with one out, then Boston Gibbs hit a two-run single to right field to make it 3-0. Carson Ryan added an RBI single of his own to push the Holly Pond lead to 4-0. One out later, Brody Howard hit an RBI single to right field to make it 5-0, then he later scored on a Locust Fork error to give them a 6-0 lead.
The Hornets got in the run column in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single as that cut it to 6-1, then in their next at-bats, they exploded for eight runs as they batted around. A trio of Holly Pond errors, an RBI single and an RBI groundout gave the Hornets a 9-6 lead. Holly Pond looked to get something going in the top of the sixth. John Martin drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a wild pitch to cut it to 9-7.
The Broncos looked to extend the game in the top of the seventh. Howard got hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then he moved up to third on a Hornet error. A sacrifice fly by Farr made it a 9-8 game, then after a walk, back-to-back RBI singles by Martin and Sawyer Olinger gave the Broncos a 10-9 lead. Locust Fork put a pair of runners on base on an error and a walk, but Olinger got the next batter to fly out to end the game as Holly Pond ended up winning a wild back-and-forth game against the Hornets 10-9.
Gibbs and Farr each finished with a hit and two RBIs for Holly Pond. Olinger added a pair of hits and an RBI. Martin, Ryan, and Howard each ended up with a hit and an RBI, while Brazelton chipped in with a pair of hits of his own.
The Broncos will have a rematch with Locust Fork on Tuesday at home in a doubleheader.
Vinemont 15 – Susan Moore 10 (Softball)
Vinemont struck first in the top of the second inning. Berkley Gable reached on an infield single, then Mabry Thompson drew a walk. A Lady Bulldog error allowed Gable to score to put the Lady Eagles in the run column first, then a sacrifice fly by Emma Dortch brought home both Thompson and Haley Millwood to give Vinemont a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles continued to add onto their lead in their next at-bats. Angela Harris hit an infield single to lead off the bases, then Katelyn Evans made it 4-0 on an RBI double. A Thompson single loaded the bases with one out, then Haley Millwood and Arleigh Thomason each hit back-to-back RBI singles to push their lead to 6-0. Dortch later added an RBI single of her own, then a single by Callie Millwood loaded the bases once again. Harris drew a bases-loaded walk to force home a run, then Dortch scored on a wild pitch to give Vinemont a commanding 9-0 lead.
Susan Moore got in the run column in the bottom of the fourth as a two-run double and a two-run single cut it to 9-4. The Lady Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded RBI single by Harris with one out, but the Lady Bulldogs continued to chip away at Vinemont’s lead as an RBI single and an RBI groundout made it a 10-6 game. A two-run single by Thompson and an RBI single by Brinley Pair in the top of the sixth pushed the Lady Eagle lead to 13-6, but Susan Moore added two more runs in their half on a Vinemont error.
Harris and Gable each hit RBI singles in the top of the seventh to give Vinemont a 15-8 lead. The Lady Bulldogs hit a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to cut it to 15-10, but during the RBI single, a perfect throw from Harris to Callie Millwood nailed the Susan Moore runner at third to end the game. Vinemont picked up a huge 15-10 win over Susan Moore.
Harris finished four-for-four with three RBIs for Vinemont. Thomason added three hits and three RBIs. Dortch ended up with a hit and three RBIs. Haley Millwood added a hit and two RBIs. Gable finished with three hits and an RBI. Evans and Pair each collected a hit and an RBI in the contest, while Callie Millwood and Thompson each chipped in with a hit of their own.
Vinemont will be on the road Tuesday to take on J.B. Pennington.
