CULLMAN, Ala. – The search for the new East Elementary School principal is underway after David Wiggins announced his retirement last month. Cullman City Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff is heading the search for Wiggins’ replacement.
Kallhoff is currently putting together a team that will be interviewing applicants and making the final decision.
“I told the parents and staff that we will have a committee. There will be some parent representation in there,” Kallhoff stated.
Even though Kallhoff is the one making the recommendation, he believes it’s important to listen to the community.
He said, “I do want to hear from those who are at the table. I want to hear what they have to say.”
Kallhoff said he sent a survey to faculty and staff at East Elementary and discovered that the priorities for the new hire were focused on student safety, organization and structure, communication and instructional leadership. According to Kallhoff it’s important to listen to faculty and staff because they are the ones who will be working closely with the new principal and their opinions are very important to him.
When asked if he was looking to hire within the Cullman City School system or was looking outside of it, Kallhoff said both. He said he does want the new hire to reside in Cullman.
“You want someone who’s not only serving the students and employees, but is also involved in the community. You don’t want to hire someone too far away that’s not invested in the community.”
Kallhoff said he would like to start interviewing candidates in late April, with follow-up interviews in early May. Ideally, he would like to have a new hire in place by June 1.
