CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library will host Spring Break Camp Monday-Wednesday, March 27-29 at 10 a.m. for kids ages 8-18.
On Monday, kids will participate in the “Nailed It Challenge” to decorate cupcakes like Minions from “Despicable Me.” The library will provide one plain cupcake per participant and all the supplies, including Twinkies, icing and googly eyes.
Cullman County Library Circulation Manager Laura Benton said, “This will be a fun activity that will sharpen their listening and observational skills.”
Participants can take their decorated cupcakes home after the contest.
The second day of the program will feature a ladybug mandala craft. The library will have prepped and painted smooth stones black, and it will have special tools for creating different sized dots with paint. Paint, tools and instructions for creating the ladybug mandalas will be provided. According to Benton this will be a fun crafting experience that will take concentration and creativity.
On the last day of Spring Break Camp, the library will host a STEM challenge. Participants will be provided LEGOS, cardboard tubes, cardboard, tape, etc. to create their own HEXBUG mazes. HEXBUGS are battery-operated “bugs” that vibrate and move around. In order to keep them contained and going on a straight path, participants will need to create an environment that will not only contain the HEXBUGS, but also help propel them forward. This will be a challenge in engineering and planning.
“We will allow the kids/teens to build for about 15-20 minutes and then let them test run the bugs. They will then be given an additional 15 minutes to make changes and revamp their designs, after which we will see whose design works best and with what materials, etc.,” Benton explained.
Programs will start at 10 a.m. each day and will take less than an hour to complete. Kids ages 8-18 are welcome to participate. The main branch of the Cullman County Public Library is located at 200 Clark St. NE in Cullman.
