PREP SOFTBALL: Cullman tops West Point on the road 13-2

WEST POINT, Ala. – The Cullman Lady Bearcats traveled to West Point for a matchup with the Lady Warriors Monday night and returned home with an impressive, 13-2 win. Cullman plated 10 runs in the top of the third to take a commanding lead and kept West Point off the board in the next two innings to wrap up the win in five innings.

Haley Shannon led off the top of the first with a bunt single and she stole second base just one pitch later. Kylie Stracener drove Shannon home with an RBI single up the middle and the Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Taylor Au singled into right field later in the inning and Reese Hopper drove her into score with an RBI single into left field to make it a 2-0 game. A double play got West Point out of the inning and the Lady Warriors were able to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single from Brinlee Phillips.

Alexis Kimbril lifted a solo home run over the center field wall to tie things up at 2 in the bottom of the second but the Lady Bearcats responded in their half of the third. Singles by Au and Hopper gave Cullman a pair of base runners. A pair of walks and a pair of hit batters allowed three runs to score and Stracener ripped a 2-run single into center field to stretch the lead to 7-2. Two pitches later, an error pushed another run across the plate and in her next at bat, Au punched a 2-run double into right field to give the ‘Cats a 10-2 lead. An error and an RBI single from Sadie Graham plated two more runs and Cullman went into the bottom of the third leading the Lady Warriors 12-2.

Emma Claire Wilson retired the next nine batters she faced over the next three innings on just 25 pitches and an RBI single off the bat of Hattie Graham capped off a 13-2 victory for the Lady Bearcats.

Wilson tossed all five innings to collect the win, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six. Au finished 4/4 at the plate for Cullman and Shannon (two RBIs) and Wilson (two RBIs) each added three hits. Sadie Graham and Stracener each finished with a pair of hits and RBIs in the win Hopper (one hit), Britton (one hit), Hattie Graham (one hit) and Abby Maples each drove in a run as well.

Phillips and Kimbrill (HR) each finished with a hit and an RBI for West Point in the loss.

The Lady Warriors will return home Tuesday night to take on Hayden and Cullman will be on the road facing Jasper.
