CULLMAN Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday met Cullman High School’s (CHS’) new varsity football head coach Danny Stiff. Cullman City Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff provided an overview of Stiff’s resume, which includes coaching stints at Hoover High School, the University of Alabama and the University of Tennessee.
“I’ve just been overwhelmed with support and good graces by everybody,” Stiff said. “It’s a fantastic city to be a part of. Thank y’all for having me here and believing in my vision.
“I told my wife this weekend that everyone has been so nice and so gracious that eventually I’m going to get suspicious. Surely everybody can’t be this nice,” Stiff joked, drawing laughter from the council.
Stiff told the council he wants his team to become involved in volunteer work around town and be a “positive representation” of the city.
Kallhoff provided a quarterly report on the city schools, noting that National Board Certified Cullman City Primary School first-grade teacher Amanda Stidham and Cullman Middle School seventh-grade English teacher Katie McGee were recently named teachers of the year for the system. Each is now in the running for the District 6 Teacher of the Year and then, depending on the outcome, the Alabama State Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in the spring.
Council President Jenny Folsom gave a first-quarter financial report that covered October-December 2022 in which the City saw revenue up $2 million (18%) to $13 million over 2022’s first-quarter of $11 million. Expenses during the three-month period decreased by 14% due to many budgeted projects not yet started for the fiscal year. Folsom reported that Cullman County again has the second lowest unemployment rate in Alabama, behind only Shelby County.
Also announced was Spring Cleanup Week, which will be held the week of March 20-24 on city sanitation customers’ regular trash pick-up days. Residents may place bulky items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances at their curbs by 6 a.m. on their regular sanitation pick-up days, and the items will be picked up at no extra cost. It should be noted that construction materials and hazardous materials cannot be picked up. Green waste, or brush pickup, will be paused during the week. Mark Bussman and Jeff Hill were reappointed to the Industrial Development Board.
In other business, the following agenda items were approved:
- Set a public hearing on Feb. 20, 2023, at 7 p.m. for Ordinance 2023-14 to adopt the 2021 International Building Code including the companion codes, which received a favorable recommendation from the Cullman Planning Commission
- A special event request from City Clerk Wes Moore to hold the 2023 AHSAA State Track Meet at Cullman High School May 3-6, 2023
- Resolution 2023-20 to declare and surplus inventory, equipment and other assets not needed by the City of Cullman
- Resolution 2023-21 to award bid for Mann Subbasin sewer rehabilitation for cleaning and tv inspection to the lowest responsible bidder, Spectrum Industrial Services, in the amount of $471,807
- Resolution 2023-22 to award bid for the concrete and electrical work on the Cullman recycling building to the lowest responsible bidder, BMSI, in the amount of $264,641
The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, at Cullman City Hall.
