WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Warriors took on the Brewer Patriots in a big pair of area matchups at Jim Boyd Gymnasium Friday night and West Point ended up splitting their games. The Lady Warriors rolled past the Lady Patriots 67-30 but in the boys’ game, a late comeback attempt by West Point fell just short and the Warriors fell in a heartbreaker to Brewer 47-44.
West Point 67 – Brewer 30 (Varsity Girls)
Camryn Faulkner converted her and-one opportunity to put West Point on the scoreboard first, then Jaelyn Faulkner added a pair of free throws to give them a quick 5-0 lead. Brewer would cut it to 5-3, but Liberty Shadix drilled a long-range shot and later added a pair of free throws to give the Lady Warriors a 10-3 lead. Jaelyn Faulkner hit a shot down low to make it 12-3, then Laklin Shadix knocked down a pair of shots late in the first quarter as the Lady Warriors took a 16-7 lead into the second period.
Laklin Shadix knocked down a three, then Caitlee Simmons hit a driving layup to push the Lady Warrior lead to 21-7. Liberty Shadix hit a trey, then an and-one by Simmons made it 27-7, but the Lady Patriots went on a 6-0 run to make it a 27-13 game. Hailee Wheeler hit a pair of free throws late in the second quarter and Camryn Faulkner hit a late basket as the Lady Warriors took a 31-17 lead into the locker room.
A basket by Laklin Shadix and a three by Liberty Shadix made it 36-17, then later on, a pair of baskets by Camryn Faulkner and a pair of Liberty Shadix treys pushed West Point’s lead to 46-22. Liberty Shadix hit a pair of free throws and Wheeler drilled a three to make it a 51-25 game going into the final period. West Point’s lead reached 30 at 58-28 on a Simmons trey and they would go on to take the win over the Lady Patriots, 67-30.
Liberty Shadix led the way for West Point (11-7, 4-0) with 19 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks. Camryn Faulkner added 11 points and four rebounds. Jaelyn Faulkner ended up with 10 points. Laklin Shadix added nine points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks, while Simmons collected eight points.
Brewer 47 – West Point 44 (Varsity Boys)
It was a tough time scoring for both teams as both defenses dominated to start out the game. Brewer hit a shot down low to get on the scoreboard first, but a rebound and a floater by Kanaan Sutter got West Point on the scoreboard with 5:24 left to go in the opening period. A pair of Patriot made shots made it 6-2, but Ashton Rodgers knocked down a shot to make it a two-point game. A late three by Brewer, though, made it a 9-4 game going into the second period.
Kolten Perry and Rodgers each hit a shot in the paint to cut it to 9-8 to start out the second period and later on, Perry knocked down a short jumper to keep it at a one-point game at 11-10. The Patriots scored the next seven points to push their lead to 18-10 and later made it 21-12 as they converted on their and-one opportunity. Rodgers drilled a three and Pressley Burtis hit a jumper to cut it to 21-17, but the Patriots increased their lead to 25-17. A Burtis three from the left corner made it a five-point game, but a made shot by Brewer saw them take a 27-20 lead into the locker room.
Brewer quickly pushed their lead to 31-20 to start out the third quarter, but Rodgers got red-hot from the field as he drilled a pair of threes and converted his and-one opportunity to cut it to 33-29 with a little over five minutes to go in the period. A pair of Patriot free throws made it 37-31, but West Point trimmed into the deficit before the quarter ended as Burtis hit a pair of shots and Rodgers hit a floater to cut it to 39-37 going into the final period.
Jay Lamar hit a layup to tie the game up at 39, but six straight points by the Patriots saw them take a 45-39 lead. Perry knocked down a floater to make it a 45-41 game, then a Rodgers free throws trimmed it to just three points at 45-42 with less than two minutes to go in the game. Burtis got fouled with 15 seconds left to go in the contest and knocked down both shots from the line to make it a one-point game. Brewer hit a pair from the line to make it a 47-44 game. Multiple attempts to tie the game came up just short and West Point dropped a tough game to Brewer 47-44.
Rodgers led the way for West Point (8-13, 1-4) with 23 points and four rebounds. Burtis added 11 points, while Perry ended up with six points, five rebounds, and four blocks. West Point’s varsity boys will travel to take on Carbon Hill at Cordova on Monday.
Both varsity squads will host Russellville next Friday night in their final area games of the season.
