HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council at its Thursday, Dec. 22, meeting voted to raise building and business license fees for the first time since 2006. Ordinance 651 saw the building license fee increase from $10 to $14 and the minimum business license fee increase from $110 to $116, effective in 2023.
“Interest on delinquent licenses is set by the State and may change quarterly, and allows for the issuance fee to increase per State allowance every five years,” explained Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail. “So, when we vote on this tonight, we won’t have to worry, if I understand this right, about another increase for another five years.
“I think we’ve done pretty good. It’s not gone up since 2006. I don’t know a business around here whose prices haven’t gone up since 2006. Everybody understands that it costs money to do business. I don’t think that’s unreasonable,” Nail continued.
The council approved the retail beer and wine licenses for Dolgencorp, LLC, the new Dollar General on Arkadelphia Road. It was noted in the work session that the company is in arrears to the City for over $700 for another location and that payment would be expected immediately.
The Tiny House Pocket Neighborhood discussion was tabled to allow the city attorney to continue researching the best avenue for Hanceville to take.
Hanceville City Hall will be closed Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday. The next council meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 12. The work session will begin at 5 p.m. and regular council meeting at 5:30.
